Tomedrop Postmortem

And another one down.

This was a fun jam! The resolution restriction really makes you think about what is worth putting on the screen.

What Went Right

The Mage is 12px tall. Drawing a run cycle for a character that is that small is weird. There's a couple of the frames that just look goofy when taken out of context. But the context somehow makes it work.

I feel that the tome spells cover a good range of effects. A quintessential fireball, AoE with chain lightning, and burst damage with ice shards. There was fourth tome spell that was planned, but was cut for time. The basic spell was intentionally kind of silly. The mage is actually kind of crap at magic. But they sure know how to use the tomes!

The radial spell selector / health bar was largely thanks to goddommitdom. Bouncing ideas around with her is invaluable.

What Went Wrong

There wasn't much that went incredibly off base. Although there was a headache due to the way Godot batches materials, so the hit effect would play on all enemies when you hit any of them.

The big one was audio. I didn't allocate enough time to properly add sounds to everything that needed them. Footsteps for the mage, icicles being thrown and hitting enemies, hurt sounds, and probably more are all absent. My audio workflow is admittedly Not Great, and I still have a ton to learn there.

There's also some oddities with the way Godot plays audio that I wasn't able to devote time to figure out. Maybe it was my code, but when I tell the audio player to stop playing and it doesn't, that's kind of a problem. The chain lightning spell is the one that suffers from this issue. Sometimes it'll just play the entire sound clip even if it's not supposed to.

If I Had More Time

I would've loved to make the floating, uh, place, feel more alive. A few more decoration options would've gone a long way. Maybe another floor you could see in the distance. A system was planned where you would descend the complex, procedurally generating new levels. The victory screen was added literally 20 minutes before the deadline, so there was absolutely no time for anything else.

I'm very happy with how this one turned out!

Looking forward to the next jam!
